Johnny Lee Walker
There is a relatively small segment of leaders in the marketing industry. Individuals who seem able to build relationships, trust, and rapport with almost anyone. They are able to broker relationships and make connections between people, creating partnerships and alliances, and motivating forward momentum to “get things done.”
Johnny Lee Walker is one of those people. With More than 25 years of solid B2B marketing experience, he is delivering profitable solutions to drive sales, attract and maintain customers, and build a solid corporate brand. Cultivating relationships with key industry people earned him a reputation for being enthusiastic, efficient, and hands-on.
Johnny earned a Bachelor of Science in the Mass Communications program at Bemidji State University. He spent 4 years working at the college radio station as well as his senior year managing the college TV station at BSU. From there he was approached to join RP Broadcasting in Bemidji, MN to work at the area’s newest radio station. Johnny spent the next 21 years on air, doing production and sales as well as fine tuning his networking and marketing skills.
While he enjoyed his work with RP Broadcasting, he made a decision to leave the radio industry for 3 years to focus on his marketing and management skills when the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Gaming division based in the Bemidji area offered him the Marketing Director position. Johnny oversaw the marketing efforts in digital, print, and multi-media as well as researching and booking all entertainment and events for all three casinos. He also was responsible for a staff of 40 people in the marketing department and players club.
Missing the radio industry, he had the opportunity to go back. Cumulus Media out of Minneapolis, MN brought Johnny on as a Sales & Marketing Executive. Cumulus is made up of 3 radio stations in the Minneapolis market: 92-KQRS, 93X, and the VIBE. While with Cumulus, Johnny had the opportunity to experience large market radio, make valuable contacts in the industry and grow in sales, marketing and promotion.
With almost three decades in the business, Johnny found himself with the decision to come full circle and head back to where it all started…Bemidji, MN. Hubbard Broadcasting approached Johnny to come work for them. HBI wanted Johnny to join their management team in the Bemidji market as their Sales Manager. With his extensive background and connection to the area HBI knew he would be the right person to hire. Johnny started with Paul Bunyan Broadcasting February 1, 2017 and is eagerly contributing to an already successful corporation.
Throughout it all, Johnny has repeatedly proved his ability to lead through diverse and challenging situations. He is an excellent agent of change and has a documented track record of accomplishments that include sales, marketing, management and promotion.
Today, Johnny resides in Bemidji, with his girlfriend and son. He has top-notch qualifications working across the entire broadcast industry. It is challenging to put his skills in a “box”. But what is absolutely clear, is that he has a great deal to offer and while job titles may vary, it will almost certainly include some combination of sales, marketing, and programming.
Johnny Lee Walker can be reached at 218.766.1876 or by email email@example.com.

KB101 Morning Show Co-Host
Heidi was born and raised in Shakopee back when it was still a “small town.” The youngest of five, she always got in trouble for talking too much and now she makes it her living!
Heidi studied cosmetology out of high school – another good career for a “professional talker.” She owned a salon in Burnsville for a few years before joining her husband, Pizza Man Dan, in their pizza business. They lived in the town of Lakeville since 1994, were married in 1997 and eventually migrated to the Bemidji area after “visiting” for several years.
Heidi has a stepson, Andrew, and a grandson, Jacob; two kitties, Stinker and Tommi, and a 69 pound Labradoodle, Jesse.
A fan of ANYTHING outdoors, she’d rather be lost in the woods than found at home! When not out hunting or “getting lost”, any season of fishing warms her heart! (Not that she’d brag, but her biggest walleye so far: 28’5”). As far as sports, what’s not to like? Her preferences: baseball, hockey, football, but not necessarily in that order! And, don’t even mention playing games – cards, board games – doesn’t matter….she loves 'em all!
Favorite quotes: You’ve got two lives. One you’re given, the other one you make. Make it a GREAT day, or not. Remember the choice is up to you.
Heidi’s personal comment: This community is truly amazing and very dear to my heart. I can see why it draws so many people, and why people stay once they are here! I am SO proud to be part of the Paul Bunyan Broadcasting team. I feel like I am “home” again! Thanks to all of our listeners! KEEP SMILING AND ENJOY LIFE!
Operations Manager - KBUN & KB101 - The Morning Show & Chat-About
Todd grew up in the Dakotas, but he came to Bemidji in 1975 to attend Bemidji State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography…of all things.
His involvement in music and theatre led him to Paul Bunyan Broadcasting where he began working in January of 1980. Todd worked part time on KBUN and KB101 until beginning a full-time afternoon show on KBUN Country in April 1980. He moved to mornings in 1984.
In 1985, Todd left Bemidji and Paul Bunyan Broadcasting to work in major market radio at KEBC-FM in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but he returned to become Program Director of KBUN and KB101 and resumed doing The Morning Show later that year.
Todd is co-host of the KB101 Morning Show with Heidi Boyd and the daily talk show, “Chat-About” with news director Larissa Donovan. He also serves as Program Director for KB101 and Operations Director for Paul Bunyan Broadcasting.
He shares his life with his three loves: his wife Danelle, and daughters Savannah and Giselle
Program Director - Z-99
Co-host of the Z-99 Morning Show, Jack began his broadcasting career in the late 60’s, hanging around a local radio station in the Twin Cities. A day after graduating from high school he enrolled in Brown Institute, School of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, which led to his first job in Spearman, Texas. (Don’t look for it on a map, it’s no longer there.)
Jack worked his way up the ladder, eventually landing a job as the afternoon announcer at KDWB-FM in Minneapolis, where he worked under “The Big Guy” which led to his job in Bemidji on Z99. “The Big Guy” eventually wore Jack down and he accepted the position of co-host of the Z99 Morning Show along with Melissa Carlson. Hicks now claims that he won’t leave Bemidji under any circumstances! “If they come for me, they’ll have another Ruby Ridge on their hands,” Hicks was reportedly overheard proclaiming.
In addition to Z99 and KDWB, Jack has worked at radio stations KQRS and KS95 in Minneapolis, as well as at stations in Green Bay, WI, Rochester, MN, Modesto, CA, Anchorage, AK, and St. Cloud, MN.
He plays guitar and has performed with Nick St. Nickalaus of Steppenwolf, Jason and the Scorchers and several Twin Cities bands. He also fronts “The Jack Hicks Band” and has performed at Moondance Jam twice.
High School Sports Play-by-Play
Joel Hoover is the play-by-play announcer for Bemidji High School sports on the Lumberjack Radio Network, the host of High Noon on KBUN-FM 104.5, and the midday host on KZY FM 95.5. He has been with Paul Bunyan Broadcasting since July 2015.
Joel originally grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 2011 and enrolled at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, PA later that year with a major in journalism and a minor in sport management. Joel’s major focus of time in college was pursuing a career in play-by-play sportscasting.
In addition to hosting his own sports talk show on the campus radio station, Joel broadcasted for Messiah’s men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and national champion men’s and women’s soccer teams. His experiences included traveling to Massachusetts and New Jersey (twice) for “March Madness” Division III tournament games and calling the action of several NCAA Division III soccer tournament games.
Following his graduation from Messiah in May 2015, Joel moved to Bemidji to take on the opportunity to become the “Voice of the Lumberjacks” and broadcast high school sports on the radio. He is continually impressed by the sense of community in both Bemidji and the entire North Country, and loves talking about a variety of sports stories from the entire listening area on High Noon. He also greatly enjoys “spinning tunes” every day on KZY and weekends on KB-101.
In his spare time, Joel enjoys helping with the Compass young adult church ministry in Bemidji, as well as finding time to play and watch soccer—his favorite sport, and one he has played since age 5. He loves riding his bike or driving his car around the lake, boating and tubing with friends, as well as watching all kinds of different sports and broadcasters as a spectator and observer. He enjoys watching most of the Philly sports teams (Union, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers), Manchester United, and…the Green Bay Packers, who he has been a fan of since age 4.
Operations Manager: 95.5 KZY & KBUN SportsRadio Network (FM104.5 & AM 1450/FM94.9)
Co-Host: KZY Morning Show
Host/Producer: Fishin' Paul Bunyan Country
Kev was born in San Bernardino, CA. A future surfer dude was dashed with his dad decided to move back to Minnesota where the family settled into the tiny hamlet of Red Lake Falls. After high school, it became apparent that he had no future in the two things he loved: athletic competition and musical performance. Then as he listened to the hits on WLS (at night of course), KKKL in Grand Forks and KQWB in Fargo, he realized he could play music and talk sports for a living. So a passion for radio was born.
Kev attended Bemidji State University for four years, graduating in 1985 with a degree in Mass Communications. He then did some part time radio work before getting into his first full time job in Roseau at KRWB, where he did sports, news, on-air "deejaying" and even sales.
While at Roseau, he met the love of his life, Nicole, and brainwashed her into marrying him. Shortly after that, Kev got the opportunity to move back to Bemidji and become the play-by-play voice of the Lumberjacks. He's been back since 1987.
After a dozen year of following many Lumberjack teams to exotic locales all over our great state, Kev became (and still is) the Operations Manager and Morning Show Co-Host with the legendary Tom Lucas on 95.5 KZY when it signed on in 1999. He also roams the hallways and does sports updates on all of the Paul Bunyan Broadcasting stations. He continues to serve as Operations Manager of The Bun Sports Network and joins Joel Hoover on "High Noon" weekdays.
Kev and Nicole have three children (Jake, Kaila & Mollie), a daughter-in-law (Ashley) and one grandson (Sebastian).
Lumberjack Radio Network – KBUN Pay by Play
Curtis Joe is the Studio Host and Producer of Lumberjack Sports on the Lumberjack Radio Network, as well as one the BUN's play by play guys.
Curtis graduated from Wadena-Deer Creek High School, MN in 1997. After high school Curtis attended Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls, MN and majored in Broadcasting. While attending NCTC, Curtis worked for the college radio station 90.1 FM. After completing his time at NTC, Curtis got a job at KMAV in Mayville, ND where he worked for 5 years doing announcing, working the board for games, play by play, and sales.
Curtis took a break from radio for the next ten years. During this time he worked in residential services taking care of people with varying disabilities.
In 2007, Curtis moved to Bemidji with his soon to be wife Jacqui. They got married in August 2008. Curtis has one daughter Samantha. He also has two pets, Mollie the dog and Snuggles the cat. After many years of listening to Curtis talk about his love for working in radio his wife and father in law grew tired of hearing him talk about it all the time. They both thought he would be a good fit in the radio scene and told him to go for it and get the word out that he wanted to get back into radio. Some friends from church connected Curtis to the legendary Kev Jackson and Curtis became a member of the KBUN team in November 2011.
Curtis is a sports fan through and through and supports his local sports teams, the Bemidji Lumberjacks, Bemidji State University Beavers, and the IFL team, the Bemidji Axemen. He also enjoys watching the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins, Wild, and Gophers. He attends games whenever possible and when he is not working the board at KBUN. When not at a game, you will usually find Curtis in front of the TV watching a game, listening to a game on the radio, or constantly checking his phone for sports updates. He does not like to miss anything going on in the sports world.
Morning Show Co-host KZY
Tom Lucas is a Chicago-area native and 30 plus year radio survivor, on KZY since 1999. He has degrees in English, Psychology and Speech Communications from St. Cloud State University, and took a respite from broadcasting to teach high school English and American history. He is currently the Head Coach of the Bemidji High School Speech Team, and holds a position on the Board of Bemidji’s Paul Bunyan Playhouse. Tom says he is definitely a "morning person", as he tends to get cranky and contrary after work.
Tom's eclectic musical tastes run from Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen, to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, plus the great song writers He lists "Good Thing Going" by Sinatra among his favorite songs, "The Verdict" and "Casablanca" among his favorite movies, and "Lancelot Link" and "Me and the Chimp" starring the Great Ted Bessel, among his favorite TV shows.
Since Tom is a Viking and Cub fan, he believes all professional sports are "dumb" and "probably rigged."
Tom spends his summers fishing, landscaping, golfing poorly, and gardening moderately.
Kat Anne Mullen does the Midday shows (10am - 2pm) on both KB101 and Z99. When she’s not on the air, Kat is a singer/songwriter, published author and horror movie aficionado. Her favorite season is Autumn, and she loves riding motorcycles, hiking and growing things. Kat says the best job she’s ever had is being “Mima” to her 5 amazing grandchildren. Kat lives with her fiancé and their animal menagerie in Northern Minnesota
Morning Show Co-host KZY
I started my broadcasting career at Bemidji State University. At first it was a few play-by-play baseball games after my playing career had ended. During my junior year at college I became the Sports Director at the campus radio station KBSB FM90. It was at this time I started working at Paul Bunyan Broadcasting. I started out as a Sports Engineer, working the board for the Twins, Vikings, Monday Night Football, etc. I think I pestered Kev Jackson long enough that he finally allowed me to broadcast play-by-play for the local High School sports teams. After College I was hired as the DJ for Afternoon Drive on the new 95.5 KZY in June of 1999. Then, we learned that Paul Bunyan Broadcasting was acquiring KLLZ and in January of 2001, I moved to Midday's on Z99, and now the Morning Show with Jack and I love it!
I still cover Lumberjack Baseball on KBUN, and help out with Lumberjack's sports. Additionally, I've assisted with the news when possible. Although, since becoming Jack's side kick on the Z99 morning show, my news duties have decreased.
Another passion of mine is Bemidji State Athletics. I've had the privilege to be the play-by-play voice of KBSU Channel 17 coverage of Beaver Sports since 2001 and since Lakeland Public Television took over the hockey broadcasts in 2010.
I married a local girl in 2003 and Tracy and I love the Bemidji area. Sports has always been a big part of my life, instilled from childhood. My father had season tickets at Maple Leaf Gardens, that’s as spoiled as any child from Canada could be. I played baseball for Bemidji State, and junior hockey in Canada and still play some Softball, Golf, and Hockey and enjoy canoing with my family.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Dave got his start at Bemidji State University where he graduated with a Communications Degree and was featured on the campus station, KBSB. He then moseyed across town where he began work at Paul Bunyan Broadcasting where he worked his way into afternoon drive on KB101! The man faces sleep deprivation as he anchors the overnight portion of the yearly Radiothon To Prevent Child Abuse! He can also be heard on KZY fluxing his capacitor during tours to yesteryear!
Dave also spends some time helping the Lakeland Television team with their nightly newscasts behind, and occasionally in front of the camera picking up a spatula or forecast incoming weather fronts from time to time.
Mr. Brooks recently married the most lovely gal who, despite her small stature, terrifies him! They welcomed their own little tiny bundle in the summer of 2016 and are still learning how to cope with their Big Chunk-O-Cute! Dave has been active in the community having invested his time with the Bemidji Jaycees, officiating roller derby and mentoring in Student's First. He loves his sports, Halloween and keeping a ninja death-grip on his inner kid. Honestly, we now KNOW there is something wrong with him.
Allen was born and raised in Aitkin, Minnesota. “To this day, the business district still has only one intersection with stoplights. Aitkin is the home of the famous Fish House Parade.” Allen began working at his hometown radio station while a sophomore in high school. Upon graduation, he enrolled in what was then named Brown Institute to further his skills in broadcasting, enjoying work as an announcer and advertising copy writer until 1994. Allen put down his headphones to attend Bemidji State University and was active in the performing arts such as BSU Theatre, Opera Night Ensemble, Bemidji Choir, and Madrigal Dinner, graduating With Honors in 1998. Allen now calls Walker, Minnesota his home after more than a decade out on the wide open prairies of North Dakota. “I’ve come back to my first love—working in radio. My second love is enjoying the hiking trails and campsites throughout the north woods.”
Larissa Donovan has lived in the Bemidji area almost all her life, with the exception of her birth in Poughkeepsie, NY. She attended high school here, and is currently a Bemidji State University senior who expects to graduate this fall. Larissa is majoring in Marketing Communications and minoring in Accounting. A self-described news junkie, she looks forward to waking up at 3:30am to bring you the news live at 6:05am! Larissa started the News Director position on Election Day 2016. Much thanks to "coach" Tom Lucas, Todd Haugen, Kev Jackson, and Joel Swanson for giving her the chance to be the best News Director she can be.
